Derek Bell's story, The Space Traders, is a science fiction or political fiction story. Derek Bell believes that racism is permanent (or will always remain and affect every decision in our country). Pretend the trade that he writes about actually is about to happen. Our planet faces a disaster. It has no money to function, no more sources of energy to give people basic services such as a running kitchen sink, and the environment is polluted to the point that people can't walk outside. Aliens arrive, and offer the leaders of our government a trade. The aliens will restore the planet if the government offers up all of the black people. Based off the reading (B.P. 48-65) and your own beliefs about racism, would our government actually do this trade?
Please write a full listserv comment and practice remaining politically correct! Mr. Schuman will grade your response on the five factors we talked about during the first week of class: formal language (no slang) length (an extended paragraph), references to the text, awareness (of everyone else's comments), and originality (try to present a new theory or make a shockingly unique thesis-statement).
LISTSERV DISCUSSION QUESTION FOUR: Would our government ship all Black people to another planet if aliens offered to restore our economy, resources, and otherwise uncurable diseases?

I enjoy these type of questions simply, because there controversial and very interesting. On the other-hand the following comment is my opinion and my opinion only. I'm not here to offend nobody, nor cause mayhem over this. But Derek Bell's story, The Space Traders. is a political fiction dealing with racism. He has an idea that the government would in fact ship people of color in order to acquire peace, and restore a utopia type of country. I agree with him, sadly our country, Government and society still has racism embedded on them. The fact that you don't see it much is, because people are afraid to speak out there true beliefs and opinions. Reason being so they wont face any arguments or any issue destroying his/her persona. The problem is society wants life to be PERFECT. For a government to reach perfectionism is almost close to being impossible. Simply, because everybody has his/her opinions. But, in this science fiction book, Dereck Bell, has an idea that aliens would intervene. That the aliens would allow for a trade-off. Giving them people of color for a utopia. When people tell them, you do this and you will get something you always wanted. One would stop to think, and actually almost agree if what they want wouldn't affect them at all. So when the Caucasian sees this trade, they would say YES YES YES. I know they may be categorized as racist, a bigot and so on, but the other Caucasian people wouldn't care. There people too, and peoples mind react quickly to the word Perfecting. And if the case is sending a group of minorities to another world in order for that to come true. Sadly our Government will react with a yes. Racism will never leave, it's the cold-hard truth. Dereck Bell, critical race theories are placed well in this book. Again, i know it's very controversial, but i say just look at the world with open eyes. I am not signaling a person as being racist, but rather the big picture. The whole society as Dereck Bell placed it as. This is why i think the government would preform such action as this.
RIP: Dereck Bell
If a black person was to read this, they probably would feel some type of way. It seems that someone always points out the BLACKS, never the hispanics or whites. I'm black but reading this question I'm not being ignorant, I'm being educated and realistic. With that being said; According to what Francis said, it is sad but true. I believe, if the government had a small chance to ship all black people to another planet so they can be better economically , have better resources and cure diseases they would. I mean look at it this way, this world is going through a bad recession. People are losing jobs and becoming homeless. Their are many people dying from various diseases such as cancer, beast cancer, diabetes, HIV, AIDS, etc. This world is going through changes that some people can't handle. Because of these changes the government would do any and everything to save this world, even if they have to ship all black people to another planet. They are going to do whats best from their country , not what is best for a group of people.
Would our government ship all Black people to another planet if aliens offered to restore our economy, resources, and otherwise uncurable diseases?
I do not believe the government would ever make such an exchange, reason being is because we the PEOPLE are the government. If aliens would invade our ground /territory where we all were born we would not let the government or anyone make such a wrongful decision. An example can be found in the movie Batman the Dark Knight where you see two boats with bombs one with innocent humans and another with prisoners. Both face the threat of being exploded if neither of them pressed the detonator in a certain amount of time, but on both boats they convinced everyone on board to wait it out and not push the detonator. Just like the American civil war the whites from the north got involved by fighting the south over there unlawful acts of slavery (Blacks/African Americans) but they had no reason to fight the south, the whites from the north were not being awarded with anything for getting involved concluding that they fought against the south because they knew it was the right thing to do and also injustice to any human civil rights. If the American government did not like blacks they would not have U.S. Marines in Africa who currently have units deployed there today. "Marine Corps units in Africa work with U.S., international and local forces to increase stability and security and to support humanitarian operations. Operations focus on enabling African forces to conduct peacekeeping operations, deterring arms proliferation and building security cooperation between nations."(Marines)It is not the government whose racist; but some of the people appointed to the position. You cannot blame one person’s actions on a whole group. If the government was racists against Blacks/African Americans they government could’ve terminated the blacks right now if it wanted to. By simply not giving them government jobs, taking away their shelter, basic education, their food and finally their health benefits that would be a checkmate. Then it can be guaranteed that our economy will better itself, see if it were to pull a race out any race it would = more jobs, and less people to worry about. But the question is why don’t they do that now in order to get rid of most of its problems?? Like earlier said in my argument we are the government. The leaders put in those positions are people we put, we vote on our beliefs to support our opinions and represent us. Therefore I highly disagree with Francis and Cynthia’s' statements. Although leaders might have it cross their heads the wouldn’t come to an agreement because people would revoke the government, they would be afraid to be responsible for such incident and no one wants the whole world to look at them as being racists.
