Drafting College Essays - Pleasure or Pain

Please read the article, "Process Writing and the Secondary School Reality: A Compromise". See pages 67-74 of your Bulk Pack Materials. Barbara Carney, author of the article, describes how she makes her students write five total drafts of their papers. This week, you are writing the first draft of your personal statement (essay for college). Mr. Schuman will make you write five total drafts of your personal statement.

DISCUSSION QUESTION SIX (Please Respond):

1. Should Mr. Schuman make students write five total drafts of their personal statement or is the drafting process utter insanity and a waste of time?

2. Which draft is the most important one: D1, D2, D3, D4, or D5?

Please base your comments and responses off the ideas that Barbara Carney presents in her article.

I believe that Mr. Schuman holds his students' best interests in mind. He may make students do a tremendous amount of work, but the reason is that he wants the quality of their work to be high. After looking through Barbara Carney's article, I believe that the third draft, or "D3", is the most important of the five drafts. Students write D3 after they receive comments from a classmate. Usually, our classmates give the most honest advice and feedback. As a result, if D3 is the only draft that occurs after a classmate's feedback, it really exists as the perfect test. Responsible writers will value their classmates' comments whereas apathetic writers will not even try to consider their classmates' comments. For this reason, D3 exists as the most important draft in the writing process!

I Agree with the comment before me. It is imperitive to write a numerous amount of drafts especially becuase these essays will determine the next four years of our lives. I would like to compare our writing to a piece of gold. Our final draft being the gold. We could only find the gold after we have diggen throught the rock and dusted off the rubble. Our writing can be gold but without the digging and dusting, our papers will never reach the full potential they are destined to be. I belive D1 is the most important draft because that is the draft that is going to have all the content. If we do not know where to dig then we will keep digging in a place where no gold is. The first draft is like the x point because once we know where to dig then we can find gold. Barbara Carney tought for years; researched and experienced the best ways for students to learn and I belive 5 drafts is adaquate to find our gold.

I agree with Mr. Schuman and Jonathan. Writing five different papers for our college essay will benefit everone on finding a topics and numerous ideas will pop up in our minds. I like the example Jonathan used with the gold to explain how important our college essays will be. After selling that piece of gold it will bring a great change in our future and help us in the long run. I believe that D4 has the most value. You will see that you have went through many ideas and changes to get the prefect college essay.

Having to write several drafts of an essay before final completion is an excellent idea. I feel as though this is a benifitial practice for all who hold interest in writing fantastic essays should take heed into. I totally agree with Jonathan and Blakes responses, they were brilliant. I would like to add that completing five drafts before we aquire the finished product is not only like finding gold. It is pushed more towards the idea of acheiving all your major goals that build up to the point of your success in life. The most important draft would be the last draft, because it is the finished product with no errors.(hopefully) The fifth draft is also the most important, because it is the final copy of a brilliant essay. It is your main piece that admission councelers are going to care about and read. They dont care about the steps you took to writing thee essay or perfecting it, but rather what it is in the end.

Even before Mr.Schuman ever said that we had to write 5 drafts of our personal statement, I believed that writing more that one is a very good idea. Not only would it help people that are not strong writers, but also help everyone write excellent personal statements. After reading, Barbara Carney's article, I believe the most important draft is either D3 or D4. During this time, the personal statement has to be clear and focused on what every one wants to write about. Once every one looks at their own writing, then they can be open to classmates constructive criticism. As seniors who want to great colleges, we have to hold high standards for ourselves and to keep in mind that practice makes perfect. So by writing more than one draft, it can benefit all of us in the future. Also, as friends, we tend to tell each other what is a good idea and what is bad, once we see what we can change with in our writing we can proceed to a wonderful Personal Statement that colleges would love.

I believe that it is a good idea for Mr. Schuman to have us write five drafts of our personal statements, because we are applying to college and we have to know that what we are writing will let the colleges know we are something and we are not like everyone else.I agree with what Mr. Schuman said about "D3" being the most important draft, because as good writers we have to take into consideration what our classmates think of our writing. The opinions of what you think and what your teacher think are not enough. Your classmates stand as a fake impression of a college board office reading your essay and making cretics along the way. Therefore,"D3" is the most important draft in the process of writing your personal statements.

I agree with everybody. If Mr Schuman has us do five drafts of our college essay is not for his own benefit. I dont believe he would want to go through our papers numerous of times just because he wants us to do so. That would mean more unnecesary work for him. I believe that he would like us to do five drafts because its going to help us in the future. The paper that we are writing is not just an essay, it determines basically everyones paths. If just one paper could do all that then you should put all the amount of effort you have to make it great. Five drafts should be nothing to the paper that is getting you somewhere. Out of all our drafts, i believe the most important one would be D1. The reason that is, is because without D1, there will not be a D2, D3 etc. You need to start with something in order to make changes, and to make it better.

Writing several college essay drafts is a very beneficial strategy to us students. Being that this one paper determines where us students are going to spend our next four years this paper needs to our best piece of writing we ever wrote. This paper should contain such reviews, time and effort due to it's tremendous value and how much this means for our futures. Not being patience and rushing through the college essay may hurt your chances of getting into the college of your dreams. With a strong college essay you may overcome some of your concerns like your G.P.A. or SAT if they happen to be reasonably low. Overall several drafts are the way to go if you want to have the most success possible during your college education.

i believe that it is a great idea for mr. schuman to make us do 5 drafts of our college essay. The more you revise your essay the stronger it gets. We start off with one idea and with help of mr schuman or others we add on to that idea and make our personal statement stronger and more detailed. i think that the most important draft is draft 3 and draft 5. that is because draft three is where youre beginning to express your ideas more clearly and when your on the verge of making it to your last and strongest draft. Its like saying "practice makes perfect" .

Honestly, writing many drafts is a very smart idea. the more amounts of drafts someones has its better then just one. You'll get to see all the little mistakes you never notice. You'll have a chance to notice paragraphs that need improvement and make all your ideas flow with what your trying to say. The most important draft to me would be draft 4. That draft will give you the chance to see all that needs to be fixed before you college essay can be complete. You'll be able to improve all of your HOCs and LOCs.

I believe that Mr. Shuman has high expectations for his seniors especially this is our final year. As a result, pushing us to our fullest potential would expand our strengths and decrease the level of our weaknesses. Writing five drafts would not hurt us, but prepare us to give the admission officers the best essay they read out the hundreds they read. Mr. Shuman has been through this process and his experience, we must be able to be teachable and open minded to his judgments and his passion to see students succeed and excel in education. I believe every gavel he bangs, the lecture he gives, and his motivation to push us shows the challenges he wants us to take. Also as students we should realize it’s time to mature and meet him half way. This is the time we put both feet into the water and get our feet wet.

I honestly believe that Mr.Schuman hold the best interest of his student by making us do 5 drafts. Others student might think this is a wastes of times, but I feel it necessary to prepare us to create an awesome college essay for college administrator. Out of the 5 drafts I think "D4" is the most important one, because this is were students have to check any corrections, and add any thoughts the teachers or students have made. "D4" is where students must do everything prefect in order to go to the final step. That why I believe "D4" is the most important draft.

I believe that writing more then one draft is very helpful...but writing five drafts is to much..I think Mr Schuman should of at least sum it up to 3 drafts, D1 should of been for us and our classmates to look at and give us their opinion , D2 should of been for Mr schuman to go over it and revise it, and D3 should of been for us to fix any mistakes. But again all five drafts have been very helpful in various ways..I cant complain!!!..I agree with Mr Schuman d3 is the most important draft out of all five drafts because our classmates help us by giving us honest advice and also add extra information that would make our essay sound better.

Well based on the reading I think that writing 5 drafts is a fantastic technique. I didnt before untill I actually saw how much writing the essay 5 different times can help you. Because writing it that first time. You think its a good essay untill schuman checks it and you see all the errors you made, so then you go back and try to correct and you notice that you still have error's so doing the essay over a bunch of times points out important mistakes. But I also think its good to do because after you write your essay for the first time, then you read it over and you hear other peoples and you find that you might not like your topic. So then in your D2 your can completely do it over and pick a topic you feel more comfortable with writing about, and also something that is easier to write about. And also I think that the D3is the most important because thats the first draft that schuman actually checks. So you actually see your mistakes and things you can fix here and there and things you can do to make it more interesting. So I feel like the D3 is most important.
