Does the University Make the Man or does the Man Make the University?

The role-play, Where did he go wrong, located on pages BP-16 and BP-17 of your Bulk-Pack Materials, examines whether or not the college a person attends makes that person respected, successful, and competitive. Some people think people who go to "big-name" universities have an edge when competing against people who go to "lesser-name" schools. For example, imagine graduates of Harvard Universtiy and Pace Universtiy competing for one available spot at a certain law firm. Will the employer making the decision see "Harvard" at the top of the first person's resume and automatically select him? In contrast, some people think the man (or woman) make the university. This other school of thought looks at people who spend their four years of college lying on the college green, cutting class, and going to frat parties. Can people who "waste their four years" at an acclaimed universtiy still find success? You decide: Does the university make the man or does the man make the university?

LISTSERV DISCUSSION QUESTION FIVE (PLEASE RESPOND): Does the university make the man or does the man make the university? For this question, you may also talk about whether or not a high-school student's college essay (personal statement) matters in the overall college selection process.

I do not agree with either, the university does not make the man and the man does not make the university. I feel that the man offers his will to the university and the university gives the man advice, not only by talking but by it's structure and surroundings. The university and the man feed off of one another, if the university made the man then the man would have to put forward some effort as well meaning the man cooperated and made the university, they make each other function to it's highest abilities.

I think the university makes the man. Students go to college to grow and become more independent. students surroundings cause a change and a growth becoming a man or a women. The university feeds the student with the knowledge, granting the student the path to success.Yes I do agree that the man has a great influence on the university, but first the university takes the student and gives the student the programs, activities and more the university has to offer to change a student into a man.

I completly agree with Charles. What I like the most about his comment is when he mentions "the university and the man feed off one another". This is very true.Imagine a university with low acheving students but with a great staff and great programs. Usually low acheving students would not take advantage of this. They would not form a part of the programs. Usually they would not perform to their potential.Or imagine a school with great students but the university has no programs to challenge their minds. The high acheving students would not perform to their potential. This in fact may lower ability to perform in a rigorous academic enviroment. The best thing about having great students and a great school is how they work together. I feel like a school should complement what a student is willing to do. For example Harvard University and Borough of Manhattan Community college. The programs and opportunities they provide for their students are tremendously different. A student at Harvard has proven they are able to dedictate themselves harder when it comes to education than a student in BMMCC.Truly education is all about commitment. If you commmit yourself to learn and enlightend your mind to it's highest potential or even beyond. Harvard is a school for you. On the other hand BMMCC is sort of like a training to do those things. School's perform on diffrent levels and have a different standards. A school with both the elements of a great school and great programs is the highest acheving school. Unlike a school with lower standards. There for a believe a stdent should be competent with the school they are attending. The school and the student have to be able to grow on the same pace.

I acknowledge the points made by the prior posters that schools generally fit the needs of attending students. I think, however, that the posters have yet to recognize the seriousness of this week's debate question. A theory that I would like to present is that power drives people's decision-making. The original most powerful people in our country attended some of the top schools. Now, they and their descendants prefer people like them. This preference causes power to reside in the same families and same hands. As a result, the university does make the man. Why would a top law firm or corporation select a job candidate from a lesser-name school. Such a selection would equate to giving power away to new people, races, and cultures. I know this view is a cynical outlook, but America is a very competitive land! People in power want to stay in power. Just ask Mr. Established (BP-16 - BP-17).

I dont agree with neither of the choices, because the man does not make the university nor does the university make the man. The university can only provide advice and influences for different people and its up to the person itself to be influenced or stay on their own personal path. The unniversity is made based upon its followers and believers in the school.

i definitely feel that man makes the university. i know people are thinking figuratively but you must think literally as well. without man, there would be no such thing as university in the first place. man designs and constructs the university. man works at the university and teaches others. the only thing is that it take certain type of people to make up a university. also the type of man, represents what type the university is. an example is Harvard university. in order to get into the school, you must have great grades and must have enough intelligence. that shows what type of university it is and what type of man makes the university. so definitely man makes the university

In my opinion, I believe it comes in an order whether or not if the University Makes the Man. first, I believe in order for the University to establish their name, the students who apply and have enrolled have to exceptionally well-achieving students. After the University has already established a name for itself as a great university, students will then probably leave with a "big head" that they went to one of the greatest institutions in the United States. I was told today by an actually Admissions Officer from Utica College as she couldn't stress enough how important the college essay is in their selection process. Although, many other colleges have different selection methods and the commitee who gives the "yes or no" on an applicants applicant might be biased so there really isn't a definate answer. My opinion on whether it matter is I believe It plays a role in which you meet the university's standards from enrollment, then the admissions officer will take a deeper look into the application starting with the reccommendations and then the essay. In general, an admissions officer has to read about 1,000 essays or more and I know they would not want to read every single application so I feel it isn't as important unlike many other factors in the college application process(Schuman). In conclusion, whether or not if the university makes the man or the man makes the unviersity works like a two-way street and works both ways. It totally depends on the worthiness, credibility, and "hype" that a University may possess.

To elaborate more on what Schuman said, "I acknowledge the points made by the prior posters that schools generally fit the needs of attending students."(Schuman); I was once told that schools like Yale, Columbia, and Princeton; are just generally schools that are hard to get into but then when you get there the work is generally the same as most other institutions of higher-education that you would normally attend. I can't give that thought a definate answer whether or not it be true but I do know that something I will see in the future upon enrollment in Harvard Law School someday.

I agree competely with the above poster, Faybeyon (His 1st post). As many people always question whether the university makes the man or does the man make the university, they both work in sync, as both complement each other. It is true that if there are just one spot avaible and 2 canidates, one from Havard and one from Pace, then most likely the chances are that the canidate from Harvard would be chosen over the canidate from Pace. In this world, you could be the smartest person ever, but how can you show it without being given a chance. There are many people that are overlooked because of the lack of recognition. Although i agree with both as they both make each other, without being recognized you will never get anywhere in life.

I would happen to go with, the man makes the university. Harvard, Yale, and many other universities are known for the succesful people coming out of it. When harvard started many years ago, it was not known. Then all the rich people started sending their kids to that university because they felt as if they had a greater chance to become more succesful, then goin to another university in which was not known. If a man goes to a university and becomes a doctor, then more people are going to look into it. If more and more people keep on getting succesful in that university the admission is going to get harder. Making it a well known educated university. A college will not be known if no one comes out succesful, it might always be a choice but it will not become a university without the help and effort of the man.

Honestly i think the University does make the man and the man does not make the University...In my opinion the University equip individuals with what they need to manufacture themselves for the future.I agree with Blake because even though the man have the capacity or power to make the University stronger it makes no difference because either way the University would supplied them with certain programs that would change u in many ways.Personally it depends if the college essay is important, because some colleges focus mainly on that while other colleges focus n GPA and SAT, So therefore it depends on the college.

I believe it can be both ways around honestly. Th eman can make the university and make a difference in a university and always be remembered there. Also, a university can change a person. So i think this is a trick question and something you'd have to think about for a while before making a final conclusion. I say this because a person can come into a university and for example love to party and drink and once they come into that university they change and change their ways and way of thought and better themselves. Not only can they better themselves but the school can also have a bad influence on that person.

To me, the man makes the university! It doesn't matter what school you come from what matters is how you take your education and make the best of it. Anybody can be a grauate from a community college and then make themselves something more then just that. To me what matters is where you take yourself after college. And yes the university can make the man, but a man makes other look at the university from where they came from in a different way. For example, ten years from now I could become one of the hottest lawyers out with a degree from community colleges. And others will start thinking ''oh, does a university really has the education that they say they do?'' I do think a personal statement is needed for college. It allows others to get to know you alot better then just from your gps and what your sats look like.

In reality a men does make the university, because man constructed it. But in common sense university does make the man, because university provides programs that help men learn how to built. University are a sources of learning of the highest level, comprising a college of liberal art, a programs of graduate studies. University make the man by offering majors that will help them become into a professional worker in the future. Many undergraduate students who enter university end up leaving as a men who is ready to overcome any obstacle in their path. For example if two men where qualify into a an position of a field officer, one of the men has the best chances, because the university had given him the experiences he needed; unlike the other men he don't have any experiences. This example best demonstrates how university actually does make the man.

I believe in most or all cases the man makes the university. A university is nothing without the people that go there. For example, lets take harvard and Bmcc. If the poeple who apply to Bmcc and the people who apply to Harvard switch. The Harvard would not be so pretentious and the statistics and achivements that harvard hold would change not making it the university it is. And i belive from whAt I seen that people who work in the universitys tend to be the people who went there. Some poeple who go to the colleges help pay with donations and other things the college needs. If a high rank college had low standard and low drive students the college would be nothing. Therefor the man makes the university.

To be honest I believe that the man makes the university.Once accepted into the university, you are considered an assest that will make the university look better. But, when thinking about it they both can react off one another. The man will feel that the university will make him better because, of its good academics and then the university will feel as though after reading the personal statement of the applicant they will make their university better. The most important part trying be the man that makes the unversity your personal statement has to be unique to you and say who you are.

I honestly think that the man makes the university but since alot of the responses say that the man makes the university, im going to play devils advocate and say the university makes the man. And I say that because once you get out of high school, your young, inexperienced, and just ready to party and go crazy. But if you get accepted to a good college or a I.V league school like Harvard, or Yale then being in that enviorment might change you. Being around people you dont usualy be with will make you either better or worst. And when your in college its a whole different ballgame. There is no suspension if you get caught fighting you just get kicked from that class. And lots of things happen that you arent prepared for, so in college it will take you from a boy, into a man. The man that your university made.
