Please respond to one of the following two debate questions:
1. Should a teacher ever allow students to determine their own final semester grade? Consider how such an action would influence the lives of the students, the life of the teacher, and the running of the school.
2. Recently, Hofstra student, Danmell Ndonye, falsely accused five men of rape, because she feared being a branded a tramp, according to her boyfriend (Fasick 6). You may research this recent current event if you need more background information. Should a person who falsely accuses another person of rape be given the same consequence/punishment received by someone convicted in a real court of law. Consider how such an action would influence the life of the person making the false accusation, the life of the person falsely accused, and the running of the city.
DISCUSSION QUESTION THREE (PLEASE RESPOND): Make the best argument possible concerning either of the above two debate questions. Continue to consult pages BP-8 through BP-10 of your Bulk-Pack Materials to see the most effective types of arguments used in the twenty-first century. Students who post later and build off earlier arguments should use crescendo-type arguments. See BP-7 for a description of this type of argument!

i think that students should not pick there own grades because then they believe that they can just get the grade and not work hard like the rest of the students are in other schools do. I also think that the school will be known as an "easy passing" school where only students that apply would just think and have in there minds that they can have whatever grade withoutworking hard for it.
Students should definitely pick their own grades, because it can take a lot of stress off of the teachers back causing lots of free time to do and desire whatever you want. just think about it, not having to worry about grading any papers at the last minute, instead you can just relax and watch tv. but at the same time, the students shouldnt give themselves an automatic hundred unless THEY REALLY DESERVE. 1 option i think would make this situation better would be to let the students decide on their own grade, but if they give themselves a grade they shouldnt deserve, tghen the teacher should be able to varify and correct them on what they should get.

A person who false claims not one but 5 people for raping her should definitely get the same punishment that a person who rapes someone gets charged with. The reason i say this is because it wasn't fair that she actually got these boys arrested because she said that these boys tied her up and raped her. She was the one that wanted it. So she brought her getting "raped" on herself. I think that the boys were very smart for recording the whole thing. If it wasn't for that recording they would of been doing time for something they didn't even do. So i really think she should get sentenced and punishment the same as if the raped someone!
i feel as is the girl who falsey claim raped should most definitly should face the same consequences as if the boys were to to if they were charged. For someone to lie to the law about them young men raping her it is horrible and crucial act of a human being. She could of messed up the lives of these young five men and they would of never had day light ever again, being abused or killed in jail, having to wear that orange uniform in shame of camerms. Now their names are in papers which serves them enough negative publicity. She should really be mandated for some type of mental help. Without that camera these five young men would of never been believed of not be innocent, due to thats the way society works; you will be guilty until proven innocent, the law is not fair.
P.s.' The law is not fair as in what ever consequence you are faced with you must face it. At times thats how the law works. Just wanted to comment on my comment because yeritza felt I was using its not fair as an arguement, but I was not at all.
Well you have to remember Andre, by you saying that law is not fair, everyone is just going to think who cares if the law is fair or not!
Well yeritza to be honest with you, that is right and I should of modified what i wrote more cleary and thats why I don't think students should grade themselves giving themselves their own grade. I felt my response was very good, now it is not due to you pointing out that "fair" was in my comment posted. I really would of gave myself a high score How do you feel about students grading themselves?
Well to be honest i agree with Jerel. The reason that being because student should b able to chose their own grade but only if they deserve it. Students cant just decide to choose their own grade and not participate in class and do whatever they feel they want to do and grade themselves with an 100!
Ok so as if now Yeritza how would you grade yourself, do you feel as if your notebook is well and your start up are efficient and your notes are being taking well. I really cannot see a student grading themselves for an entire marking period, everyone is to greedy especially the ones who do not get the work done and in on time. how can we be teachable? We should all be fat students as in faithful, availble, and teachable to our education within school especially we are now seniors. Until I am proven wrong Students should be able to grade themselves I am unable to see that maturity level.
not be able to grade themselve, thats what i meant to say in the end.
I wanted to comment on the awesome discussion maintained between Andre and Yeritza. I want to note that both students feel that the law should function in a consistent manner. When someone makes the argument that a person who falsely accuses rape should receive the same punishment as someone who actually commits rape, I do not think he is necessarily making a "fairness and justice" or basic argument (B.P. 8-10). Instead, I think that person is thinking about the importance of equal and consistent treatement. For example, if the law gave stiff punishments to people who falsely accuse rape, then I think more people would start to function better. They would trust the system, and not try to take advantage of it. Overall, I agree with both Andre and Yeritza.
ohh without a doubt,a person who false claims 5 people raping her definitely deserves the same amount of punishment as a real raper. accusing a person of rape, puts the accused in danger. not only that, but gives wasteful years behind bars, givin stress and the feeling of melancholy. just put yourself in their shoes and imagin yourself gettin accused of rape, imagine the jail time your getting. if it was up to me the person accusing sumone or people of rape deserve three times the amount of a real raper. BY JEREL AKA J REL SMOOTH
yeaa i definitely agree schuman....
JEREL
i definitely agree with yeritza comment. The reason i agree with her is because they should be sentence the same amount of time in jail then a person who rapes someone. Its not fair to accuse someone of doing something they didn't do specially when you on their side and u let them do what they did to u. Also is not right to swear and then lie to the judge. Its good the guys recorded everything because it saved them from being accuse of something they didn't do. So she definitely should get the same punishment as someone who rapes.
If a teachers allow students to determine their own grade, teachers life would be less compilcated! Teachers would have less-stressful lives. They wouldnt be having to be rushing home to grade classwork and homework assignments. Instead teachers would have time to do other interesting things! For example, building their social lives. More time to themselves mean more time to meet others. Teachers that are single can date more frequently. They'll have the opportunity to get to know one another without worrying about the time or about having to rush because they have to grade tests, or other assignments. Also, students would gain the trust of a teacher by giving the teacher an accurate grade that they deserve. Not a grade thats above the work they given. For example, a student that doesnt do any work shouldnt tell their teacher that they deserve a 95 or a 100. They should tell their a decent grade that they should get based on the amount of work they have given.
I feel that students should not pick their own grades, because it causes students to slack in school. By choosing their own grade will result students to not understand the class. Choosing grade will not benefit students in the long run, because they don't learn anything, that causes them not to do well in school or even college. Students who choose own their grades is an easy way out for them. So in conclusion picking own grades in not beneficial, is important to understand how earning grades can really pay of.
I Agree with Andre that the "girl who cried wolf" should face similar charges that were initially placed on the boys if not, the maximum sentence of perjury which is the voluntary violation of an oath or vow either by swearing to what is untrue or by omission to do what has been promised under oath which you take before the trial start. The maximum sentence alloted for New York State is 5 years in prison. Mr. Schuman states that make a "fairness or justice" argument is a Level ONE Argument is and is not valid in the court of law(B.P. 8-10). Instead charging her with lying is the most political correct argument to make when deciding on what should happen.
Another reasonable punishment for the Hofstra student is expulsion from the university with all paid monies being forfieted.
I feel that students shouldn't pick their own grades because if a student chooses a grade they know they dont deserve then they wont strive to do better. The goal in life is to continiously progress and be the best you can be, if students get grades they dont deserve they will settle for an average life and wont know how it really is to work for what you want in life.
I think student's should be given the responsibility of grading themselves. Like others have mentioned,it would improve the lives of teachers. Teachers wouldn't have to worry about grading students in their spare time. Students would most likely give themselves good grades. Good grades only lead to one thing.Success. Imagine a world where everybody gets good grades.Wouldn't this be wonderful. It would improve a lot of people's self esteem. Students wouldn't feel any less intelligent than others because they have the ability to give themselves the same grade as another person. Usually student get in trouble with their parents because they have low grades. Having students with good grades will reduce parent's stress levels. A parent's job is to make sure their child succeeds. A step to success is attending college. Having the power to control your GPA would make it easier for students to attend a good college.Attending college is the goal of many students. Students who grade themselves would be able to complete the ultimate goal of attending college.
Students shouldnt and couldnt choose their own grade.First off, every one would slack and take it easy , even the smart students because they know they got it all under control and the grade they want is the grade theyre going to get , even if they do not deserve it. Second, whats the point of even going to school then if oyu know you can just come in whenever you want to give yourself the grade you want and just go back home. Although there would be total equality because everyone would pass highschool and move on to college, it isnt right. Teachers are the ones in control and it should stay that way .
Also ! If everyone gives themself the grade they want, assuming theyd give themself a passing grade without even working hard for it .. how will they get through college not knowing anything since they did nothing in school ?
I feel as though students should not grade themselves, because that privilage would only cause confusion and less learning. Students would start to take advantage of the situation and complete their assignments when they want and however they want it done. With in mind that they can write their papers and or complete their projects anyway with less effort and grade themselves with a score they feel is fair to them without considering how much others put into their work and graded themselves the same. I mean who would fail theirselves?.. Exactly! NO ONE.
If a person could lie and cry rape, then they should be able to take up to the consequenses. First if they were planing on blaming innnocent people, then they should be able to make up for the crime that they were going to blame the other person. If an innocent person was to be jailed for a crime that they did not commit, then the person who cried rape should have the same consequenses. The person accused is going to have to have a rape sheet following them for the rest of their lives. The only person to know the truth would be the accuser so they should get the same punishment because they were not so innocent after all for blaming another person.
If there were ever a circumstance in which the teacher should allow the student to determine their own grade it would be now, the senior year of their high school. As seniors students should have become more responsible and self reliant. Therefore not allowing students to determinwe their own grade is only hurting them and setting them back years. Students need to know by the time they graduate that they are responsible enough to make their own grade and get the grade they deserve with out the need of a teacher or "baby sitter" to keep after there work. IF the student does not pass a test then it is obvious that the student is not responsible enough to graduate.
I think students should be allowed to grade themselves as long as the grades are reasonable. Like if the student did all the work but it wasn't that good then they still should give themselves at least a 90 because eventhough they didn't do the work to perfection, at least they put in the effort to do the work. Unlike some students who dont even try, and they give themselevs 90's that shouldnt happen. But other students who put in the effort should get to grade themselves, I dont think all students should thought.
